Role
Shanghai.monks, the Shanghai office of global creative digital company media.monks, is looking for a tech director to push the boundaries of our digital, experiential and platform work. You lead a team of developers in Shanghai and work closely with our tech teams in other offices around the world on innovative projects that span from experiential, interactive, platforms, hardware to AR/VR and - yes - metaverse!
Responsibilities
- You’ll vet incoming projects, define our initial response, and take it from there. Your extensive expertise in conquering technical challenges will safeguard new projects from the get-go.
- Use a mixed bag of experimental technologies and proven best practices to realize technically challenging projects. Become a trailblazer across uncharted paths of development.
- You are a quick thinker and happy to do some rapid prototyping - whether that’s in a game engine, building a bot or building blocks for a platform - from virtual events to digital ecosystem services.
- Technical solutioning and oversight of assigned projects, ensuring quality, security and timelines of delivery
- Mentoring staff to ensure quality implementation, and that Capability best practices are followed
- Technical escalation point, troubleshooting and hands on technical expertise as needed

- For this Mandarin/English speaking role, we’re looking for someone with 8+ years of experience in a similar capacity at a high, international level.
- Able to compile technical documentation to help instruct development teams, no matter where they are in the world
- The position involves frequent client contact and builds on your ability to talk about technical matters in a clear-cut way (though you’re free to throw in some specialist terms, just to impress).
- You’re a strong communicator, confident in presenting (technical strategies) to C-level crowds and crystal-clear when it comes to providing updates and flagging issues. You understand and know how to navigate the political balance between enterprise stakeholders.
- When it comes to development, you’re a polyglot with functional knowledge of a wide variety of languages and expert-knowledge of technical architectures and content management systems.
- Hands-on knowledge of prevailing technical stacks is essential as we produce ever more advanced products and (e-comm) platforms.
- You have a knack for digital thinking and tech trends, demonstrated by your development experience with beta technologies and APIs.
- In addition to knowing your languages, you can advise on hosting infrastructure, security, performance issues, and the prevailing internet memes.
- You can compile technical documentation to help instruct development teams, no matter where they are in the world.
- You’re experienced working together with other developers and source-control systems such as GIT, Perforce and SVN.
- You’re experienced in providing quick ballparks and accurate project estimates, clearly defining the scope and underlying assumptions together with the producer
- Teamwork is at the core of how you work. You know when you need to acquire help from a specialist to help you reach the common end goal.
Qualifications Experience WishList (anything below are nice to have)
- Excellent frontend development skill set (at least HTML5/JS/CSS, VueJS, ReactJS, Typescript).
- Good understanding of WebGL / Unity / Particle systems
- Good understanding of backend development
- Good understanding of database architecture
- Basic understanding of cloud service capabilities and how to get started with them (in one of the following: AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, AliCould).
- Some experience with well known CMS(-adjacent) systems (WordPress, Drupal, Shopify, etc.). Familiar with AEM will be a b
